T-45C Goshawk for Microsoft Flight Simulator - Beta Test

BETA 1 SENT TO TESTERS...

BETA TEST ACCESS INSTRUCTIONS

Additional Beta testing applications will not be accepted for this project due to the extremely high number of requests received.

DESIGN INTENT:

This is a medium complexity add-on which is meant to depict the Boeing T-45C in a detailed but accessible way. The key points of the package are as follows:
- Medium-high fidelity of the avionics and pilot interface.
- Highly detailed external and internal model
- Flight model and systems simulation is based on default MSFS functionalities (no external code)
- Simple sound package

The plane is intended for intermediate military jet training and fun cloud surfing.

SOME NOTES ON SPECIAL FUNCTIONS / FEATURES

As in real life, VOR in HSI mode is only displayed in CDI mode. If PLAN is selected, VOR will not be displayed.

TACAN is simulated through the "pseudo Tacan" method (that is the channel is converted into the equivalent NAV 2 VOR frequency and used in conjuction with DME). Only X mode A/S is supported.

In the real plane, you must first start the Gas Turbine Starter to start the engine. In the sim, GTS is simulated via APU functionality and can be binded to its controls. However, engine can be started without starting the GTS first (to make life easier for beginners)

Unlike in the real world, only the current WP is shown - no point to point flight plan is shown. Also, at least in the beta, the WP index is not shown in the map (just the symbol)

Unike in the real world, LAW and BINGO warnings cannot be rejected - they will turn off automatically

Unlike in the real world, NWS is activated automatically

More than 50lbs in the centerline station will make the baggage pod appear, more than 100lbs on the underwing pylons will make the training bomb racka appear... but no bombs (sorry) as they are not allowed in the Microsoft marketplace.

BETA VERSION INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

Add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator are distributed as packages. Packages shall be placed in the "Community" folder. You will need to restart MSFS if the simulator was running when you have moved the files.

NOTE: due to the way the HUD is made, it is currently not collimated. Also, it is subject to tearing due to TAA. Please deactivate TAA for this aircraft.

HOW TO REPORT BUGS:

The preferred way to report bugs is to add a comment to this post, specifying what is the experienced malfunction and when it happens. Pics are welcome.
PLEASE do not rush in reporting bugs - it is not a race - take your time and verify if it is a real problem and, if you think it is, try to understand when it happens exactly.
Alternatively, an email is good to. Comments are preferred so that other users can see them.
It is not a race, so take your time. The simulation is quite complex, so it may take some time to get acquainted with the plane… I'd suggest you log at least a couple of hours before submitting any feedback.
Also, PLEASE, before posting a bug make sure it is not already in the list below.

COLOR KEY:

Red - Higher priority: a severe bug that may hamper the usage of the aircraft
Yellow - Lower priority: definitely a defect, but not a high priority to solve it
Green - Problem solved, o mitigated to the level that it is acceptable.
Dark Green - Problem solved or mitigated before the Beta 1 release.

Blue - Comment, nice-to-have features or suggestions

I think the “GPS” is a typo, considering you are talking about the “GTS” Just a heads up

Goshawk on hangar: canopy open, no pilots and «remove before flight» gear; superb idea (more immersion)... could be ported to the MB-339. Regards.

yellow: the altimeter does not display the hundreds

@loic

...as far as I know that is correct for the t-45 altimeter: only thousands and tens of thousands are animated in the real aircraft.

Yellow: 1."Gas turbine indicator" appears every clickeable place, when automatically started by the sim.
2. Stall Sound, a bit confusing, and it sounds on the back/left side.
3. Angle of attack indicator, front side, it's inverted. The upper 'arrow' should not be green.
4. Wheels indicator (Right beside the AOA) turns on randomly, when araound 80% or more of the power.

This, after 3hs flight testing. Will be back for more, if should I find.
(AWESOME model)

@Patricio Ceppellotti

1 - Issue already logged and solved in internal build (Reference: T45VCF040 - Incorrect label on the "remove before flight" streamers, emergency landing gear lever and other items - FIXED 15/02)

2 - Will check and ad it to the list

3 - I am a bit confused... what do you mean inverted? As far as I can tell it is correct as per NATOPS A1-T45AC-NFM-000 section 2.21 and figure 2.25, which clearly shows upper chevron ("slow") to be green, lower chevron (fast) to be red.

4 - Wheels indicator should behave as per 2.9.4.2 section 2.9.4.2 that is: £The light flashes and the tone pulses when the LDG GEAR handle is not set to DN, the throttle is below 95 percent N2 rpm position and either of the following conditions exists:
1. Altitude is less than 7,200 feet MSL and the airspeed is less than 170 KIAS (less than 9,500 ±300 feet MSL when climbing or 7,700 ±500 feet MSL when descending)
or
2. The FLAPS/SLATS levers are not in the UP position.

Note, in the sim condition 1 is averaged

@loic

I have double checked on NATOPS A1-T45AC-NFM-000 and I believe the current implementation is correct. The hundreds drum should not move.
My apologies for not having provided good documentation for you guys to test.

From NATOPS:

2.20.2 Standby Barometric Altimeter
The standby barometric altimeter is a counter drum-pointer type. The counter drum indicates altitude in thousands of feet from 00 to 99. The long pointer indicates altitude in 50 foot increments with one full revolution each 1,000 feet.
A knob and window permit setting the altimeter to the desired barometric pressure setting.

red: Roll and pitch compensation switch does not work

loic said...

@dino

actually I also checked so it's ok

Anonymous said...

@loic

"Roll and pitch compensation switch"... I guess you mean the "Roll and Pitch Trim Switch" (section 2.6.3.6). The "chinese hat" switch is actually not animated... but trim should work (via your stick control), so respectfully disagree on the red classification, unless the trim does not work at all with any control.
Anyway, I will add it to the list as a yellow item.

yellow: the frequency displayed in ***. 400 does not match. the display shows ***. 300 instead. for example I set 127.400 on the screen of the radio it is displayed 127.300 but it is well in 127.400. Same problem in ***. 200 displayed ***. 100 and in ***. 700 displayed ***. 600 and *** 900 displayed ***. 800

@loic

I cannot replicate your bug, as on my system there seems to be a perfect match bewteen tooltip and frequency on the display (I assume it is for the VOR/ILS as it is not specified in your message) - this however led to the discovery of a major bug: the VOR/ILS system should point to NAV 2 and not NAV 1...

Fantastic model, looks gorgeous in flight! Flies really well - a lot of similarities with the MB339.
Looks like some of the items I was going to list have been added to your log but have a few more:

* Underside strobe light illuminating cockpit interior.
* Landing light texture changes when on but not like a bright light source / no bloom. Looks fine at night time.
* Engine spool down stops abruptly on external view. (MB339 does the same)
* Throttle up engine and engine sound and pitch increases then subsides - this happens 2 or 3 times through the throttle range until above about 85% throttle. (MB339 does the same)
* Control surfaces show little deflection in external model, especially elevator pitch down and ailerons. (MB339 is similar but displays a little more deflection)
* Pilots are static. Can animated pilots from MB339 be incorporated?
* Tail hook - can it be mapped to simconnect variables? (TOGGLE_TAIL_HOOK_HANDLE & TAILHOOK_POSITION)

Feedback thus far after 3 hours flight time.
Possible faults - yellow level:
Default camera position or FOV issue: I think the default head position is too far forward by 5cm. This makes the FOV feel restricted and the canopy hoop takes up too much screen space. I have temporarily resolved this by using alt+down arrow to move the camera/ head back a little.

When using an axis to control the airbrakes they extend as per axis input until you reach 100% out. If the axis is moved slightly forward to 95% the airbrakes deploy fully again with the warning light confirming this in the cockpit.  This only happens in the air and not on the ground.

General thoughts:
The wheel brakes seem incredibly good, possibly unrealistically so? This does seem to be very common in FS2020 however.

It feels less analog than the MB339, it's closer to the F-15 (and not in a bad way. Maybe this is more realistic as modern trainers should feel like the aircraft they are leading the pilots onto like the F-18 etc).

Spins are possible to an extent and recovery is easy. It takes deliberate provocation to get it to depart controlled flight and it recovers within 3 revolutions. Spin initiated by flying at max alpha, engine at idle and then inputting full left rudder and right aileron or visa-versa.
Sounds are good. The engine has character to its sound even if the noise it makes is slightly unpleasant. This is perfectly fine and likely is realistic.

@Andy covered all the items I was going to post. Thanks for saving me the typing 😉 The aircraft is visually stunning. With animated pilots you’d be challenged to tell the difference between real life and the sim.
The one area my opinion differs is how the aircraft flies. It does fly very close to the MB-339 for which the following also applies.
The longitudinal axis is remarkable; well modeled, responsive, and what I would expect from this aircraft. The vertical and lateral axes are extremely sensitive and I don’t feel accurately represent the flight characteristics (please chime-in actual Goshawk pilots.) My Air Force experience included time in the T/AT-38 and some time in the F-15 as well as others. I’ve not experienced the porpoising and the large, abrupt yawing demonstrated in the T-45 in any aircraft I’ve ever flown. Not having flown the A-4, in real life or P3D, I purchased the Indiafoxtecho A-4 for P3D yesterday for test purposes.
Dino, the flight model of the A-4 is spot on. It is exactly what I would expect from this type fighter aircraft. If the T-45 FM can be adjusted to mimic that of the A-4 it would be perfect. I’m a pilot not a Dev. It’s my understanding that the tools provided by Asobo are limiting and they don’t wan’t/permit Devs to code outside their SDK. It would be very unfortunate if MSFS’s SDK prohibited Indiafoxtecho from producing the T-45 with the superior fidelity of your A-4.
All that said, this is clearly a remarkable achievement. That’s my 2 cents, maybe 10 cents worth on the flight model.
Now on to more systems testing 😃

@ All

Thank you all for your feedback!
Very busy right now but here are some miscellaneous replies:

Speedbrake - blowback is modeled... if you open it above 340kts, it will tend to blowback... once speed decreases it will be back to normal operation.

Animated pilots - not sure if they can be done (easily)...we swapped for high poly models which are difficult to animate

Tailhook variables - the tailhook is theoretically working also with SIMVAR...problem is that the SIMVAR variables do not work (not implemented yet in MSFS)...so if they do not respond, a local variable is used instead.

Flight model (@Wrap23) - the problem is not much "coding" rather than different flight modeling approach. MSFS uses a much more advanced approach to flight dynamics that P3D/FSX, but seems tuned towards small planes. That being said, I agree on excessive sensitivity on the pitch axis at low speeds - but on my system it does not feel that bad around 300 kts. Yaw departures are a problem...but seems more of a MSFS flight model side effect.

Sorry I cannot reply to all feedback at the moment - all issues have been reviewed and the accepted CR's have been added.

Something else I noticed.

External view from rear. Roll through 360 degrees. About three quarters of the way through the roll the aircraft does an exaggerated wobble. This happens rolling to the left of right. This doesn’t happen when in the cockpit view or at least isn’t perceptible from the inside. Also happens with the MB339.

Also, curious why the same pilots from the MB339 aren’t used as the animation adds to the experience when viewing from outside, especially with such a photogenic aircraft.

Andy said...

2 more...

* Top strobe light above and behind aircraft instead of on the actual light behind the cockpit.
* Flying on autopilot or copilot, once around 300kts and higher, aircraft shows rapid, micro undulations. Easily seen from behind with tail section bouncing up and down. In cockpit, aircraft appears jittery when this happens.

I am wondering if anyone noticed any changes with MS Update today?
It seems like max speed of T45 was around 470 I was cracking well into 500’s this AM prior.
I did notice my taxing stability seemed better....

Anonymous said...

@Andy

We preferred to use a new pilot figure, with a much higher detail. However pilot animation is way more complex and has been intentionally left out due to the amount of work needed.

Autopilot is not supported, nor will plan to do it.

Stobe light position seems correct on my system

@Karl LGB

Top speed before the update was almost exact to the manual (535kts). The only expected change is a minor tweak of the ground effect.

Speed issue must of been an anomaly, seems to be doing fine again, and back in 500’s.

During night flight, noticed fuel gauge needle does not illuminate in front or back seat.
All other gauges have lighted needles.

Cockpit Observations

-Altimeter-Both Cockpits-10,000s barrel needs to "snap" to next digit like the 1,000s
barrel. It slowly turns as needle travels the last thousand feet before the 10,000'
change. As animated a situation is created such that you think your at 19,000 as you
approach 10,000, 29,000 approaching 19,000....
-HUD-Dim and difficult to read against bright sky
-Color ADI-Both Cockpits-Appear to shear (TAA off)
-Data Entry Panel-Rear Cockpit-Upper row of Buttons including HUD ON/OFF show a pop up "AOA
Indexer Test" when moused over
-Pin Storage Bag-Front Cockpit-"Gas Turbine Start" pop up when moused over
-STBY STAB TRIM-Both Cockpits-Trim Toggle moves opposite of expected when mouse wheel
turned. i.e. Roll mouse wheel forward for Nose Down Trim produces Rearward Toggle Click
animation.
-RUDDER TRIM knob-Both Cockpits-Trimming Right gives negative pop up trim reading (i.e. -7)
and trimming Left gives positive reading. Rudder Trim Knob animation is correct
-Flap Lever-Both Cockpits-Displays "Left UFD Primary Function Knob" when moused over
-Graphics Ejection Seat "SAFE" and "MANUAL OVERRIDE"-Both Cockpits-other cockpit graphics
standard (Re: Item T45VCF042)
-Bright Sunlight creates (pixilated?) appearance on interior textures
-MFD Bezels-Rear Cockpit-Lower, Middle and Right bezels have "Gas Turbine Starter" pop up
when moused over (not consistent)

Hi Dino,

Did some more testing. This is with yesterday's MSFS update and reinstalled video driver. I'm still getting the trailing top strobe light. I am emailing you some images illustrating this.

@Wrap23

- Altimeter barrel: I understand. Will change the animation (although in my experience some altimeters will actually work in this way)
- HUD... this is currently the best compromise I have found according to the SDK information. Compromise is between transparency and readability. Sorry for that.
- Color ADI shear -> cannot replicate it. Works fine on my system. TAA limitations only apply to HUD (as it is blended on the background)
- "AoA Indexer test" is intended, but should apply only to AOA area. Will rework the mouse area.
- Pin storage bag -> will change it
- Trim reading...comes from MSFS cannot be changed currently.
- Piexlated appearance -> due to engine on 3rd parties aircraft
- MFD Bezels GTS tooltip -> will check

@Andy

Thanks for the email. I cannot replicate the issue. I have identified a small mistake in the lights setup, but no impact on my system. Maybe this will fix (hopefully).

Missed Approach said...

Did a few flights and been reading the NATOPS manual and these are some of the items I found.

- There is an audible click when trim the aircraft both in the roll and pitch axis. Nothing mentioned in the NATOPS about it.

- The HUD velocity vector incorrectly shows the aircraft flight path. According to paragraph 2.4.3.6.1 of the NATOPS, it is designed to predict the current flight path of the aircraft. I have point the nose at the approach end of the runway and the velocity vector shows that the aircraft is climbing and going right. Having flown the T-6B which has the same type of HUD this is most certainly incorrect.

- The aircraft horizon line on the HID is not centered when gear is up. The HUD compensates for wind but I'm not sure if this is simulated.

- The HUD and the ADI have a disparity. They do not match. There's been times where the HUD indicated that I was in a descent while the ADI indicated a nose up attitude. When leveling the aircraft based off of the HUD the ADI would indicate a nose up. During a descent on final, the ADI indicated correctly while the HUD is indicating a climb.

- The console and MAP light switches are tied together, twisting one also twist the other. Also there are no median, it either all off or all on. The switches should act as a way to increase and decrease the light intensity.

- Holding down the HDG/CRS arrows on the MFDs fixed function key does nothing. Clicking does change the HDG or CRS tho.

Will continue to fly and identify any other potential issues. The addon is outstanding so far, great job Dino.

Speed Brakes deployed over 340 KIAS open partially as the aircraft is supposed to do, however once the aircraft reduces the airspeed below 340, the aircraft should open the speed brakes to their full open position, due to the reduced resistance of air.
I need to recycle the air brakes and redeploy to show fully open and display on dash instrument lights.

A1-T45AC-NFM-000 1-2-54 2.8 Speed Brake System.
The speed brakes may not extend fully above 340 knots. A safety feature allows the speed brakes to blow back to an unspecified position when the airload against them causes the hydraulic pressure in the actuating cylinder to exceed the pressure at which the pressure relief valve opens. The speed brakes begin to blow back at an airspeed of approximately 380 knots and will extend fully if the airspeed sub- sequently decreases to 340 knots.

I reviewed prior write-ups. I think my AOA write-up may be different since the fixed date on documented issue indicates Fixed prior to Beta release.

Cockpit Illumination and Other Observations

-"Primary" Lighting should apply to Integral Lighting throughout the cockpit. There is very little integral lighting available. It is only located on VOR/ILS and part of the TACAN CONTROL PANELS.
-VOR/ILS and TACAN CONTROL PANELS, Round Dial Instruments, and Compass are always illuminated. They have no user control. You must toggle the MSFS flashlight-ON to see cockpit labels and switches at night.
-MIP and FLOOD Controls should not be tied together and should be Rheostats. Light intensity should be controllable. Full Bright is not desired when totally dark.
-MIP Rheostat should illuminate "Primary" Front instrument panel integral lights and instruments.
-FLOOD Rheostat should only control "Secondary" Strip Flood Lights for general illumination throughout cockpit.
-CONSOLE Rheostat should power Left and Right Console "Primary"=Integral Lights (not currently illuminated.)
-Currently:
MIP/FLOOD together control Forward Instrument Panel FLOOD Lights
CONSOLE controls Left and Right CONSOLE FLOOD Lights
-MFDs are full bright at all times with no intensity control.

-AOA Indicator needs to be rotated left in the instrument panel so the AOA Index when reading 17 is at 3 O'clock position. This design is deliberate so a quick glance at the AOA Needle while on final or in the final turn is easy to interpret. You don't have to "read" the guage, you simply have to see a needle that is horizontal to your instrument panel, 3 O'clock!
-HUD Horizon Line should always be displayed/superimposed over the actual horizon.
-Approach Lighting on nose gear strut doesn't work. (Probably not implemented but would be cool)

Did more testing today. Just two things to report that haven't been written up already.

1. I don't know what you got planned for the VR customers but the HUD is very much useless in VR. It is canted downward and very blurry. I found the best course of action was turn it off in VR.

2. Did some instrument flights today and this is what I notice. The VOR needle and box disappear momentarily during VOR station passage. Once you're on the other side, the VOR needle return and require for you to box VOR again on the MFD in order to get your course.

Andy said...

Hi Dino,

Rudder Trim switch tool tip has two & characters.

I also did some testing with the top strobe light issue and it appears to be an issue if starting the flight with the aircraft ready. If you turn off the strobe lights and back on, the top light is now in the correct place directly on the light source. Not sure if that is in relation to the configuration anomaly you mentioned but hopefully this helps.

Anonymous said...

All,

thanks for your comments and feedback.

Miscellaneous answers below:

EXTENAL LIGHTS:
@Andy - this may be related to the configuration anomaly... it is a known behavior of MSFS so that the placement of certain lights may not be consistent for some users depending on the aicraft starting condition. Cycling the lights command will fix the issue. Hopefully it will be solved by the configuration fix.

INTERNAL LIGHTS:
@Wrap23 - Due to lack of information in the SDK, actually there is only one cockpit light control (whatever button you press). The backlighting of the instruments is always on, this is due to avoid graphical glitches.

HUD and VR in general:
There is no intent to disappoint VR users...but in thruth there no information on the SDK on how to support VR properly (hence blurry HUD, duplicated mouse cursors etc.) - this will be reported in the product description.

AOA Indicator
Will try to fix it... I knew about the 3 o'clock (typical USN design btw) but the artwork I have received were incorrect.

VOR needle disappearing when overflying a station
This is a side effect of a piece of code introduced to fix some visual anomalies in the MFD... not sure if it can be easily fixed.

Thank you all - I will do my best to fix as many bugs as possible for the initial release... and fix the rest after that.

From WARHAMSTER

I must admit I am not as technically savvy as some of the above BETA testers who have found bugs buried in the aircraft systems. I have gone looking for some of the issues mentioned above and replicated them at times.

I have found no 'game breakers', no major or even minor problems that have stopped me from enjoying this jet. I did think I was going mad until I learned about the flaps bug the last update caused!

Having flown the jet for 5/6 hours I then compared it to the MB-339, the Fiat G.91 and the F-15 I think it far better than the last two. Both the G.91 and F-15 have recently been updated and my thoughts on both of those have become more positive but I still prefer the T-45.

T-45C stands out as an interesting and a worthy addition to anybody's hanger.

Anonymous said...

As WARHAMSTER wrote

I was very happy to be part of the beta test and I helped in what I could; my general experience is with sailplanes. I've found some little bugs, but nothing «as deep», as some T-45 experts have pointed out...

After reading the messages here, I could clearly experience those small problems. Although not game breaking; fixing them for release, will make the Goshawk a first class product.

On my humble opinion; the F-15 is a toy and the G.91 a great classic's jet experience.

The MB-339 and the T-45 will complement each other, very well. Although similar, they are quite different when in flight. Comparable ladies with unique attitudes... handle with care :D

Kind regards to all,

I'm having the sound effects in one ear cut out intermittently when i turn my head using the HP Reverb G2 and flying the MB-339 in MSFS 2020. I can certainly say engine sounds cut out, not sure about others. Please note that this is the ONLY model I have this problem with so it is not a hardware issue. I have tried turning the Windows Spatial Sound on and off and it still cuts out on one ear using this aircraft. All my other aircraft sound fine.

Hi all,

Having spent about 90 mins in the Release Candidate today I think the jet is near perfect. I have not been able to find any bugs. My knowledge of the NATOPs manual is minimal. I am still learning how to use the flight planning ADI/HDI options.
The flight model feels improved from the beta but I can't describe quite how. It feels more natural somehow. I find that the handling at high speed is unexpectedly heavy and slow compared to the MB339. This is not a criticism more of a point of interest.

I'll keep trying to break it and let you know!

WARHAMSTER.

Wrap23 said...

I agree with Warhampster. There is little to critique about the T-45. I found the pitch axis to feel more stable in the release version. I climbed in the cockpit this morning and climbed out for dinner! Dino this plane is amazing. Easily the best aircraft released for MSFS so far! I took her from cold and dark, put her through her paces and came back for an ILS...multiple times! Thank you for allowing me to participate in the Beta. Thank you also for listening to your testers and implementing their suggestions. Congratulations!

T-45C Goshawk for Microsoft Flight Simulator

Livery BUG.
If you all have the same liveries and spawn in 2 friends with different liveries, it works fine. If you have a third friend spawn in with another different livery. He will have the SAME livery as the second friend. You can NEVER have 3 different liveries. 3rd person will always have the livery of the second person. He will see himself as a different livery than what you see him as. I have tested with multiple people with downloaded and DEFAULT liveries. This is not an issue with any other aircraft. Issue only found with the T-45 and you can replicate it EVERY time.

STEPS to replicate.
Have 3 friends. All 3 friends need to select a different default livery.. The 2 friends who load first at the airport will see eachother correct. Once the 3rd friend loads up, they will see him as a clone livery. And the 3rd friends will see both the 1st and 2nd friend as the same livery.

Very odd bug, but it happens every single time.

Above livery comment is from me. It did NOT take my email. Email is rmiles0559@gmail.com. Thanks.

Interior light effects are total mess.
HUD, MFD, LED lamps, etc.. TOO BRIGHT AND BLOOMING at night. Difficult to read. Need to be sharper. Dimmer button is also required. It is okay to be little bit different from real aircraft for comfortable use. This is a PC sim.
HUD is almost not readable at day, either. It makes HUD useless.
It also glitches with TAA enabled. Other than TAA can solve it but, why not TAA?

I love T45C for MSFS. It deserves its price. So I want it to be better and greater. Thanks.

Hello dear Team!

Some days ago I purchased the T45 for MSFS and it is a really great plane.

I really enjoy flying that plane but I have one question.
When I arrived at the destination I complete the Shutdown Checks and when I pull the yellow fuel stick, the engine is off.
When the engine is off, a pilot spawns in my cockpit and the battery says that I do not have power. The voltage indicator shows me 0V... so there is no chance for me to power that plane on again...?

Can you help me with the power problem? Is there any chance to get the plane powered? Maybe GPU or something?

I am really looking forward to your answer and kind regards
