F-14D upated MDL and retro scheme

Debugging is a very tedious process... so I took a break and made the repaint above, that is the high-visibility, retro livery of the "Tomcat Sunset" cerimony.
While making this repaint I noticed that there were some mistakes in the texturing placement which I had to fix in order to complete the livery...and so I did. I also fixed some other minor mistakes highlighted by the Beta 1 testing and some minor modeling errors...

Here is a link to the latest model (and the retro livery) - everybody is welcome to download it, although requires the Beta 1 version to work.

DOWNLOAD LINK: UPDATED MDL AND RETRO LIVERY from Google Drive

Repainters: you may want to check that your repaints are working fine with this new model, list of changes are as follows:
- antenna flare on nose landing gear door resized and moved slightly backwards
- fixed texturing misplacement in engine nacelle area (nearby landing gear, should have no impact at all)
- fixed UVW misplacement on the canopy (crew names area, right side)
- changed UVW texturing on main landing gear wheels door to allow two-color painting (picked from blank area in the texture...you may want to check this - should have no impact if you stick to the default texturing in that area as you probably did)
- fixed visual interference between flaps and inflatable area when fully swept
- added high-g vapor (used F-35 effects)
well...I believe that is it.

This is not yet the final model, but the only thing I have to fix is the landing light and the animation interference of the main landing gear...

Hi Dino!

Great F-14 Model! Its the best one out there for FSX for sure! Couple of things that seem very obvious though

1) Tailhook end seems to be 'hollow' in your model. In reality, its one solid piece. http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-detail-arrestinghook.htm

2) Wings seem to droop in your model (too much anhedral). In reality, when the wings are swept forward, the wings are essentially straight with no dihedral or anhedral(from the pivot point outward). Some drawings I've seen are wrong, perhaps thats where the mistake came in. See these photos: http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-photo-vf211-06.htm and http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-photo-vf024-18.htm and http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-photo-vf101-50.htm. When they're swept back, they do appear to have some droop, but very slight: http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-photo-vf213-16.htm

Thanks for your feedback. The tailhook is an easy fix. As for the anhedral I will double check...and will fix it (provided that the fix does not screw the complex wing animation)...

Hi Dino, first of all, my biggest compliments for a real beauty!
I'd like to report another thingie I found in beta 1: I can't seem to find a way to tune the NAV radio from the pit (should be on the left console, if I'm not mistaken), the frequency just doesn't change, the knobs move but with no effect, am I doing something wrong? Using the 2D radio stack seems to be working fine though. As I said before, congrats again for this wonderful bird!

And I'm an idiot, didn't notice you already pinpointed the radio issue in the release notes, sorry for the inconvenience!

Well, at least you have read them :-)!

The radio knob issues (all of them) is a mysterious one...the code has been copy-pasted from the T-45C (and works fine in the Goshawk) - and is completely screwed in the F-14D. FSX misteries...

BTW posting comments on my cell phone seems to screw everything...

That MATS site posted above is way cool! I noticed a problem with the ventral fins. The shape is wrong - your fins are flat (they're supposed to be thicker at the attachement surface and blended to a point at the edge). Heat exchanger ductwork runs through them so it cant be flat. And is the air scoop on the right side on your model? It should be on the left side. http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-detail-fin-03.htm

Here's another detail of the back portion of the wedge shape of the ventral fins: http://www.anft.net/f-14/f14-detail-towbar-05.htm

Dear Dino Catteneo,

I Have a suggestion for the F-14's physics on the airframe, can you provide wingflex to the aircraft. You can take reference from the F-14B in the game Flight Gear which is a free open software simulation. The F-14 in that can even flex wings and also break it over stressed. Also when the plane goes supersonic you can see that big vapor cloud around the fuselage.

Sonic vapor is in the to-do list...but wing flex will not be implemented.

Carss said...

Ok but why not the wing flex??

Because at a certain point you have to stop. Otherwise it will take forever.
